Worship Resources for February 7th

5th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,
teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom,
singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
And whatever you do, in word or deed,
do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God the Father through him.
—Colossians 3:16-17

Call to Worship

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Our help is in the Lord,
the maker of heaven and earth.

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, 2 Corinthians 13:14
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
Amen.

Prayer of Adoration

God, our Creator,
from nothing you made our world.
You formed us, love us,
and give us all that we need.
God, our Redeemer,
you rescued us from sin.
You have given us new life
and hope of healing to the world.
God, our Comforter,
you are with us always.
You comfort us, renew us,
and guide us into your truth.
Almighty God, for your gracious love for us, we praise you. Amen.

Psalm 147:1-11, 20

Praise the Lord!
How good it is to sing praises to our God;
    for he is gracious, and a song of praise is fitting.
The Lord builds up Jerusalem;
    he gathers the outcasts of Israel.
He heals the brokenhearted,
    and binds up their wounds.
He determines the number of the stars;
    he gives to all of them their names.
Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
    his understanding is beyond measure.
The Lord lifts up the downtrodden;
    he casts the wicked to the ground.

Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
    make melody to our God on the lyre.
He covers the heavens with clouds,
    prepares rain for the earth,
    makes grass grow on the hills.
He gives to the animals their food,
    and to the young ravens when they cry.
His delight is not in the strength of the horse,
    nor his pleasure in the speed of a runner;
but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
    in those who hope in his steadfast love.
Praise the Lord!

Service of Confession & Assurance

God’s Law is a gift to his people, guiding us in the best way to live in relationship with him. This week, we continue our consideration of God’s life-giving words to his people in the Ten Commandments and how we often disregard those words in favor of our own ways.

Call to Confession Exodus 20:1-2, 7

Then God spoke all these words:

I am the Lord your God,
who brought you out of the land of Egypt,
out of the house of slavery.

You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God,
for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.

The Lord’s name is holy and not to be profaned. So come, let us confess all the ways in which we make God’s name common.

Prayer of Confession

O Lord our God,
we want to be honest before you about how we use your name.
In our worship, we use your holy name with reverence and awe,
that we may properly confess you, pray to you, and glorify you.
In our day-to-do lives, we cheapen your name,
using it flippantly or as an expletive;
invoking it in manipulative ways for our own purposes;
attaching it to all manner of things which you despise.
It’s hard for us to speak up when those around us do these things too.
We reflect in silence on our use of your name.
Silence
Lord, have mercy on us and forgive us for the times we misuse your holy name.
Amen.

Assurance of Pardon Romans 8:1, 34

Hear the word of the gospel, in the name of Jesus, our Savior and our Lord:

Who is in a position to condemn?
Only Christ, and Christ died for us,
Christ rose for us,
Christ reigns in power for us,
Christ prays for us.

Believe the good news:
In Christ, there is no condemnation.

The Peace

The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
And also with you.

Call to Holy Living

Rooted in the gospel, chosen by God the Father, forgiven in Christ the Son, empowered by God the Holy Spirit, here is the call God has placed on your life:

Pay attention to God’s instructions.
Take care with God’s holy name.
Use it with reverence and awe,
so that you may properly confess him,
pray to him, and praise him
in everything you say and do.
Let us continually offer to God
a sacrifice of praise—
the fruit of lips that confess his name.

Affirmation of Faith: Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Word

Prayer of Illumination

Lord our God,
send your Spirit that through your Word
we may come to Jesus,
that we will reach out in faith and touch him and be healed.
Stretch out your hand, that we may live
and know that you alone are God,
in whose faithfulness we have life all our days.
And may we proclaim to the world, the name of Jesus,
the only one in whom true life is to be found.
In Jesus’ precious and holy name, we pray. Amen.

Scripture Reading

Matthew 9:18-26

18 While he was saying these things to them, suddenly a leader of the synagogue came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died; but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” 19 And Jesus got up and followed him, with his disciples. 20 Then suddenly a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak, 21 for she said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be made well.” 22 Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well. 23 When Jesus came to the leader’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, 24 he said, “Go away; for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. 25 But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl got up. 26 And the report of this spread throughout that district.

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Prayers of the People

O Christ, we love you above all things,
and we desire, at all times and in all ways, to be fed by you.
And since we cannot now come to your Table,
we ask you to come by your Spirit into our hearts.
Unite us to you, together with all your faithful people,
and help us to embrace you with all our affections, body and soul.
Never permit us to be separated from you.
By your goodness we pray, Amen.
